Know Before You Go

  • Cultural Sensitivity: Afghanistan is a country with rich cultural traditions. Modest clothing is recommended for both men and women, especially when visiting religious sites and rural areas. Women should cover their shoulders and wear long skirts or pants.
  • Local Customs: Handshakes are common greetings, but it’s important to note that men and women may not shake hands in traditional settings. It is always respectful to ask before initiating contact.
  • Weather: Afghanistan’s weather can vary greatly depending on the region and time of year. Summer temperatures can be very hot, particularly in lowland areas, while the highlands (such as Bamiyan) can be cooler, especially in the evenings.
  • Language: Dari and Pashto are the official languages, but many people in tourist areas speak basic English. It is helpful to learn a few basic phrases like “Hello” (السلام علیکم, Aslaamu Alikom) and “Thank you” (مننه, Mañana) to show respect to locals.
  • Safety: Afghanistan is currently safe for tourists in many regions, but it is important to stay informed about the current security situation. Always follow your guide’s advice and adhere to travel advisories. Your guide will ensure your safety throughout the tour.
  • Currency: The official currency is the Afghan Afghani (AFN), but US dollars are also widely accepted. It is a good idea to have both local currency and USD on hand, especially for small purchases or in more remote areas.
  • Health & Vaccinations: It is recommended to consult with a healthcare professional to ensure you are up to date on necessary vaccinations. Carry any personal medications and a basic first aid kit. Health facilities may be limited in remote areas.
  • Electricity: Afghanistan uses 220V electricity with Type C and Type F plugs. Bring a travel adapter for your devices.
  • Respect for Religion: Afghanistan is a predominantly Muslim country, so be respectful of local religious practices. During the holy month of Ramadan, many restaurants may be closed during the day, and fasting is observed by the local population.
  • Photography: Always ask permission before taking photographs of people, especially in rural areas. Photography of military installations or government buildings is strictly prohibited.
  • Baggage: Due to the remote nature of some regions, travel may involve bumpy roads and long drives. Pack light and ensure your luggage is durable and easy to transport.
